Q: HOW DO I MAKE A COMPLAINT ABOUT A DOG'S EXCESSIVE BARKING?
A:

The City contracts with the County of Ventura Animal Services Department for animal control issues, including enforcement of the City's ordinance to declare any dog a public nuisance that barks so loudly, so frequently, and continuously over so long a period of time as to deprive individuals in the neighborhood of the comfortable enjoyment of their homes. For more information on how to file a complaint regarding an excessively barking dog, please visit the Animal Services website or call 1-888-223-7387. You may also contact the City's Code Enforcement staff at 583-6753 for additional information and assistance.

Q: WHOM DO I CONTACT TO REPORT A POTHOLE IN THE STREET?
A:
To report a pothole or other maintenance problem, please click here or contact the Public Works Dispatcher at (805) 583-6400.
Q: WHERE DO I GO TO APPLY FOR A CITY BUSINESS LICENSE?
A:
To obtain a new Business Tax Certificate, please bring a completed Business Tax Certificate Application to the Planning Division at 3855-A Alamo Street (map).  To renew an existing Business Tax Certificate, please visit the Customer Services Division at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road (map).
Q: HOW DO I OBTAIN A DOG LICENSE?
A:
If you live within Ventura County and are within the Ventura County Department of Animal Services area of service, you must purchase an animal license AND have your animal vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. This vaccination must be updated every one to three years (depending on the type of vaccine). The County shelters do not vaccinate animals, but do provide low-cost 'clinics' throughout the county. A team of Licensing Inspectors canvasses the County to ensure compliance with State and Local licensing and rabies vaccination requirements. For more licensing information, please call (805) 388-4341 or (888)-223-PETS, option 6.

License Fees:

  • Male or female dogs and cats $50.00 per year
  • Spayed or neutered dogs and cats: $20.00 per year
  • Penalty license applies 30 days after license due date: Plus 100%
  • Cat licensing is required in the cities of Moorpark and Oxnard.

Dog licenses may be obtained at City Hall at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road, some local pet stores, veterinarian offices and at the County's Simi Valley Holding Facility and the Main Shelter in Camarillo. For more information including a full listing of licensing locations, please call the County's Animal Regulation Department at (888) 223-7387 or visit the Ventura County Department of Animal Services licensing website.

Download a PDF license application to complete and mail or bring to the Camarillo Shelter.

Q: HOW DO I REPORT A CODE ENFORCEMENT COMPLAINT?
    A:
File a complaint with Code Enforcement by telephone at (805) 583-6753, in person at the Code Enforcement counter at 3855-A Alamo Street, by mail at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road, Simi Valley, CA 93063, or by fax to (805) 583-6301.  To complete a complaint form, click here.
Q: WHAT TYPE OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE WOULD ASSIST ME IN BECOMING A POLICE OFFICER WITH THE SIMI VALLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT?
    A:

The Simi Valley Police Department places a high value on advanced education. Although a college education is not a requirement for employment as a Police Officer, most of our Officers have completed some college coursework and many have bachelor’s degrees. The area of college coursework does not necessarily have to be related to the study of criminal justice.

Employment or volunteer positions involving public contact, customer service, interpersonal communication, dependability, and responsibility, as well as military experience, can provide applicants with the skills and abilities to be successful in the law enforcement field.

Q: HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT JOB OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE SIMI VALLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT?
    A:

Both sworn and civilian job openings are posted on the City of Simi Valley website, and announcement flyers are available at the information desk at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Q: HOW DO I GET A TRAFFIC SIGNAL INSTALLED AT AN INTERSECTION?
    A:

Please contact the City's Traffic Engineering Division at (805) 583-6786 to request the installation of a traffic signal at a particular intersection.  Traffic engineers follow State and Federal guidelines and criteria called "warrants" to evaluate intersections for signal installation.

Q: HOW DO I GET A COPY OF THE GRADING PLANS FOR MY LOT?
    A:
Contact the Public Works Department at (805) 583-6786.  The Development Division maintains grading plans for most lots in the City.
Q: CAN I GET "CHILDREN AT PLAY" SIGNS INSTALLED ON MY STREET?
    A:

“Children at Play” signs and similar signs are not recognized by the State of California or by the Federal Highway Administration as official traffic control devices and therefore, are not installed by the City on public streets.

Many people believe that “Children at Play” signs and similar signs, such as “Slow,” or “Slow Entering Residential Area,” enhance the children’s safety, but may not realize that there are many safety concerns about the use of these signs. Such signs have been proven to be ineffective in providing added protection for children, and the sign’s presence could negatively affect the children’s safety on our streets.

Q: HOW CAN I GET A TRAFFIC SIGN SUCH AS "DEAD END" OR "NO OUTLET" AND OTHER ROAD SIGNS ON OUR CITY STREETS?
    A:
Please contact the Public Works Engineering Counter at (805) 583-6786.
Q: IF AN EXISTING SIGN IS MISSING OR KNOCKED DOWN, WHOM DO I CONTACT?
    A:
Contact the City's Public Services Center at (805) 583-6400.
Q: I AM A CONTRACTOR AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I CAN DO GRADING ON MY PROJECT ON SATURDAY?
    A:
Work may be allowed if overtime inspection is arranged for prior to the date of work, and provided an inspector is available. Contact the Public Works Department, Development Division, at (805) 583-6786.
Q: HOW CAN I GET A SPEED LIMIT SIGN ON MY STREET?
    A:

The City installs speed limit signs on all major roadways. Speed limit signs are not required for residential streets. The speed limit on residential streets is established by State law and often referred to as “prima facie” limit which does not require posting of signs for enforcement. Other prima facie limits established are 15 mph in alleys, at blind intersections, blind railroad crossings, and 25 mph in business, and posted school zones when children are going to and from school.

Q: WHOM DO I CALL REGARDING TRAFFIC SIGNAL TIMING OR OUTAGES?
    A:

For traffic signal timing, please call Traffic Engineering (805) 583-6786. To report a traffic signal malfunction, please call the Police Department dispatch center at (805) 583-6950.

Q: HOW DO I REQUEST THE CITY TO INSTALL SPEED HUMPS ON MY STREET?
    A:
Contact the Public Works Engineering Section at (805) 583-6786.
Q: I WAS GIVEN A TRAFFIC TICKET AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN A TRAFFIC OR SPEED LIMIT SIGN WAS INSTALLED. WHOM DO I CONTACT?
    A:
Please contact the Public Works Engineering Counter at (805) 583-6786.
    Q: HOW DO I REQUEST A CROSSWALK?
    A:
Contact the Public Works Engineering Section at (805) 583-6786.
Q: CAN I PAINT THE CURB RED AND INSTALL MY OWN TRAFFIC SIGNS ON MY STREET?
    A:

No. Only public authorities shall place traffic signs and markings for the purpose of regulating, warning, or guiding traffic as stated in the California Department of Transportation Traffic Manual (Caltrans). The City installs curb paint/no-stopping signs, or other traffic signs and markings, after careful examination of their need and impacts on City streets. Therefore, all signs and curb markings in the public right-of-way must be installed by the City or with the City’s approval. For more information, contact the Traffic Engineering Division at (805) 583-6786.

Q: I AM INTERESTED IN TRAFFIC VOLUMES ON CITY STREETS. WHERE CAN I GET THIS INFORMATION?
    A:

Each year the City of Simi Valley publishes an 8”x11” Average Daily Traffic (ADT) Map showing the traffic volumes for all major arterial streets within the City limits and for the Ronald Reagan Freeway.  To view the map click here or contact the City's Public Works Counter at (805) 583-6786 for more information.
