PURPOSE The Community Emergency Response Training Program (CERT) provides Simi Valley Residents and businesses with skills to become self-reliant and to assist other during disasters. TRAINING Residents and workers of Simi Valley businesses are trained in a variety of emergency response skills, including: • Disaster Awareness and Preparedness • Disaster Fire Suppression Techniques • Hazardous Materials Awareness • Disaster Medical Operations • Light Search and Rescue Techniques • Small Unit/Team Organization and Leadership • Disaster Psychology • Terrorism Awareness This training is conducted by the Ventura County Fire Department in conjunction with the Simi Valley Office of Emergency Services. There is no cost for receiving this training. OPERATIONS CERT trained citizens assume that professional emergency responders (police, fire, paramedics) will be overextended and unable to respond immediately during disasters such as major earthquakes. CERT trained citizens self-activate, following a disaster, to check on the well being of family members in their own household, nearby neighbors, or co-workers, if a disaster occurs while they are away at work. CERT is intended to be a “neighbor helping neighbor” principle. Over 900 people have completed CERT training in Simi Valley since 1994. HOW TO SIGN-UP FOR CERT TRAINING If you are interested in learning how to be prepared for disasters, now is the time to enroll in an upcoming class. CERT sessions are held several times during the year. Please check the CERT class schedule for the dates of the next class. Download an application or pick one up at the Police Station front desk. Complete the application and return it via U.S. Mail, to: “CERT Coordinator”, 3901 Alamo Street, Simi Valley, CA 93063 or e-mail it to: CERT@simivalley.org or fax it Attention “CERT Coordinator” to (805) 583-6201. After your application is received and processed, you will receive a letter with information about the status of your class placement. REQUIREMENTS You must be at least 18 years old and live or work in Simi Valley, in order to participate in the CERT program. • Refer to the CERT class schedule to view the dates of upcoming classes. • Download a CERT application and return it to the CERT Coordinator.
