Community Reflections

"My favorite memory of Simi Valley was in high school. There was only one high school at the time; there were only 50 of us students. We would give operettas and plays and the whole community came! We also had pickup ballgames at night and everybody went to watch."
- Mavy Cormode, 75-year resident

What is your favorite memory involving the Simi Valley community?
“The Tuesday Noontime Rotary Club, and the Rotary Anne’s, the wives of the Rotary members. They gave the community an outlet to gather and meet. Dr. Bob Brown initiated the Rotary Olympics; we would invite five clubs from the Ventura County area and have various athletic events the whole weekend, it was a lot of fun.”
– Sal Fasulo, 72 years old, former drive-in theater manager, 45 year resident of Simi Valley
“My favorite memory of Simi Valley is going to the Simi Valley Days carnival, walking in the parade, dancing at the Cajun Festival with my Papa, Grammie, and Mom… there are too many to have a favorite!”
– Holly Tignac, 8 years old, student, 8 year resident of Simi Valley
“Getting on the Neighborhood Council Executive Board and how everybody went overboard to take me in and answer any questions to make me feel like I’ve lived here for the last 50 years.”
– Aaron Babit, 65 years old, Neighborhood Council Executive Board member, 3 year resident of Simi Valley
"Coriganville was a great place to go when I was little. We moved here in 1958 and my parents (Harry and Gladys Macleery) opened up a nursery school on Los Angeles Ave. called "Tiny Tot Pre school."
- Trish (Patricia Macleery) English, 60 years old, 51-year resident of Simi Valley
What was your first impression of Simi Valley?
“Paradise! We didn't have traffic; we didn't have any crime. Everybody knew everybody else and took care of everybody. It was like an extended family."
– Mavy Cormode, 101 years old, former teacher, 75 year resident of Simi Valley
“When I first moved here, my wife was pregnant, so I commuted for 3 months. I remember bringing her over the Santa Susana Pass for the first time (there was no freeway) and I was very concerned that she wouldn't like it. But, as soon as we came down the backside of the Pass, she was just so thrilled with what she saw."
– Sal Fasulo, 72 years old, former drive-in theater manager, 45 year resident of Simi Valley
“The first time I drove down the hill into Simi I was in awe of the beauty of the hills. We had heard that Simi was a safe city and a great place to raise kids; we decided to move from Van Nuys."
– Mary Evans, 63 years old, Neighborhood Council Executive Board member, 25 year resident of Simi Valley
What makes Simi Valley a special place to live?
“It’s a tight-knit community."
– C.J. Cruz, 17 years old, 2009-10 Youth Council Chair, 17 year resident of Simi Valley
“It’s filled with nice people."
– Holly Tignac, 8 years old, student, 8 year resident of Simi Valley
“It’s close enough to the City, but yet you feel like you’re out in the country and it's quieter and cleaner out here."
– Aaron Babit, 65 years old, Neighborhood Council Executive Board member, 3 year resident of Simi Valley
“Over the years I have found that the people of Simi are friendly and helpful, especially our neighbors. Everyone looks out for each other. It is also a comfort to know that if there is a problem regarding crime, the Police are there immediately and I know of this first hand."
– Mary Evans, 63 years old, Neighborhood Council Executive Board member, 25 year resident of Simi Valley
