Services for Youth Ages 15 to 22
The Youth Employment Service (YES) is provided at no cost to the youth of Simi Valley. Youth ages 15 through 22 can make appointments Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to receive coaching on the application process, interview skills, professionalism in the workplace, and job referrals. Appointments can be made by calling (805) 522-HIRE (4473). Our office is located at 3855-A Alamo Street (map).
All youth under the age of 18 who register with the YES must have their parents/guardians complete a Waiver of Liability prior to receiving job referrals. Youth age 18 and over must complete it themselves and bring it with them to their appointment. For more information for parents and guardians, please click here. The YES does not issue work permits. Contact the youth's school of attendance for work permit eligibility information and an application. Youth who have previously registered with the YES can contact the program at (805) 522-HIRE (4473) for additional job referrals at any time. An annual Job and Career Expo is hosted each spring where youth can meet directly with employers who are currently hiring. Services for Youth Ages 13 and 14
Youth ages 13 and 14 can sign up to attend an “Entering the Workforce” workshop offered by the YES two to three times per year. The Entering the Workforce workshop focuses on employment law, employment options for youth ages 13 and 14, and job skill preparation. The workshop is one hour in length, and students may sign-up at any time. Each student will be contacted for the next scheduled session and invited to attend. The YES is provided at no cost to the employers of Simi Valley. Employers can call the YES to post their open positions for distribution to YES clients during one-on-one meetings, as well as via e-list to those clients who have previously registered with the YES and have expressed interest in receiving additional job referrals. Job referrals are provided to candidates based on their ability to meet certain minimum qualifications, such as age. Youth will contact the employer directly and follow the employer’s official application process. Employers may download the Job Order form, complete it, and fax it back to the YES at (805) 583-7952. Youth Employment Service (YES) Advisory Board The Youth Employment Service Advisory Board is made up of representatives of government agencies, schools, employers, and community members at large to discuss employment issues that relate to youth. The Board is comprised of 15 members and up to three alternates. Meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month during the school year, September through June, at 8:15 a.m. in the City Hall Community Room. For meeting dates and agendas, please click here. The meetings are open to the public, and anyone with an interest in youth employment is encouraged to attend. Recruitment Recruitment for the YES Advisory Board begins each September and interested applicants must complete an application, which is reviewed by a selection committee. New members are appointed by the City Council for two-year terms that commence on December 1st. Events The YES Advisory Board coordinates a Job and Career Expo held at the Boys and Girls Club of Simi Valley each spring. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, April 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and over 700 youth between the ages of 15 and 22 are expected to attend. Employers will be on hand to provide information about their companies and accept applications. Many employers interview candidates on-the-spot and extend job offers the same day. Youth should come dressed to impress and prepared to interview. The YES Advisory Board also coordinates Interview Skills Workshops at each of the local high schools. The Interview Skills Workshops are presented each spring to prepare students to apply for their first job either at the annual Job and Career Expo or in the community. The presentation includes how to complete a job application, how to dress to meet employers, and how to prepare for an interview.
